Community
In an effort to broaden our outreach and improve the health of children in need
within Lancaster County, St. Joseph Health Ministries continues to partner with community organizations and initiatives that promote healthier communities.
Highlights from the 2009 Fiscal Year:
- In July, SJHM provided $15,000 for the final year of its three-year commitment to the Clergy and Congregational Health program of the Samaritan Counseling Center.
- In March, SJHM provided $7,771 to KinderSee, a partnership between Family Eye Group and the School District of Lancaster. The program screened children at Washington Elementary School for visual deficiencies; in particular, progressive amblyopia, or “lazy eye,” which causes vision loss. The funding covered the costs of screenings and, if needed, glasses, for under-served children.
- SJHM and Lancaster General Hospital each contributed $25,000 to fund a feasibility study to determine if a community need would be met by the development of a hospital-based dental residency program. The goal of the program would be to provide a high-quality educational experience to residents while serving as a component of a communitywide strategy to provide primary and specialty dental services to under-served adults and children within Lancaster County.
- SJHM provided an in-kind donation valued at $8,300 to the community through the participation of staff members on panels and committees whose goals were to improve the overall health of the residents of Lancaster County, and by paying for the printing of a dental directory listing available service points in Lancaster County.
