Fluoride Finder
Community water fluoridation has been called one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th Century (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Even in an era of fluoride toothpaste, according to the American Dental Association, water fluoridation can reduce tooth decay by 20 to 40 percent. Every dollar invested in water fluoridation saves $38 in dental treatment. Yet less than one-third of the Lancaster County public is served by public water systems that are fluoridated. And fluoride levels are not the same across the county.
Our Fluoride Finder interactive map makes it easy to check whether you’re on a public water system and, if so, whether that system is at the optimal level for the prevention of cavities as recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Areas that are served by public water appear on the map as one of two colors:
- Purple if the water system has a “natural fluoride concentration below levels considered optimal for the prevention of cavities”
- Green if the water system adjusts “the natural fluoride concentration upward to or above the optimal level for the prevention of cavities.”
